Whitewater Rafting in Utah
"ex-Marine" (husband, Steve) loves to tell the story how when he was in the Corps, he had to swim two miles in the Pacific, wearing "Full Fatigues and a Mae West", two Marines holding on to a rope together...yadda yadda. Explain to me why he is now resistant to any trip that involves water - other than cooling off in a swimming pool?
But, I've persisted and he's finally run out of excuses. I am planning a Whitewater Rafting trip with ....six (6) grandchildren along for the time of our lives....I hope. There will be three 14-year olds (Josh, Lexi and Zach), three 11-year olds (Nicky, Sarah and Jenna), and one extra parent (Mike). Unfortunately, Nicky (our 11 year-old grandson) was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 5, and his Dad is coming along on this trip to deal with the 24/7 issues that come along with this terrible disease.
The preliminary planning, before even talking to Rafting operators, took at lot of coaxing. One grandchild (plus "ex-Marine") is terrified of falling off a raft, even though they are good swimmers. Another, isn't fond of bugs or camping. I also had to find a trip that wasn't too tame or too scary for us first-timers. Other criteria:
- Length of Rafting/Camping Trip and Dates - These kids have commitments - Camp, Summer School, Summer Vacation - had to work around six different schedules;
- Cost of Trip;
- Air;
- What's included; and
- The PARENTS! " Please let them come with us." "Yes, I will take excellent care of them and they will never be out of my sight." "I would never let anything happen to them." "Yes, they will wear life jackets....and on-and-on." But I can understand their concern.
Planning a trip is never easy even without the added stress of trying to please everyone! But I'm determined to get this trip on the river and from Internet surfing, I am thinking Green River, Utah.

Got brochures from OARS, Sheri Griffith, Western River Expeditions....according to my travel agent...they are prominent organizers...but there are plenty more to choose from. Decisions to be made...
