Thoughts About Slovenia
- The Slovene population is around 1,900,000+ with almost an equal amount of cell phones. Guide told us if we that if we ever get lost, stop someone and ask them to make cell call for us. They will.
- Only about 270,000 persons live in Ljubljana.
- 70% of high school graduates go on to a University.
- Slovenia has an extensive network of buses and trains making it very easy to get around the country. If you choose to rent a car, the road system is excellent. Eurail Austria/Slovenia/Croatia Pass
- We saw ample farmland but when we asked what crops are usually planted, Saso told us that farmers are subsidized by the Government not to farm. Too much inexpensive produce comes in from Italy, and other surrounding countries.
- Cleveland, Ohio has the largest population of Slovenes living in the United States, followed by Joliet, Illinois. Do you remember American "Polka King", Frankie Yankovic? He used to lead friends and fans on junkets through Slovenia, along with his band. Slovenian and Austrian music are very similar...lots of oom-pah-pah...and yodeling.
- There are around 600 brown bears roaming the forests. The bears are usually given as presents to visiting Heads of State. Jacques Chirac was recently given two.
- Every hotel we stayed at had "no smoking" in their restaurants, and some "no smoking" anywhere in the hotel.
- Most of the country is covered with Wi-Fi.
- Around 60% of Slovenia is covered with forests and I believe it! Green, Green, Green!
- Everyone we spoke to spoke more than two languages...sometimes five.
- The air is clean and unpolluted. When did you last visit a country that can claim that?
- You can drink the water and eat uncooked salads and vegetables.
- Helia planned a wonderful trip for us and we look forward to visiting Slovenia again.
And, Slovenia has the friendliest population we've ever met.
