Still More Boston to Do and See
It wouldn't have been a perfect trip for "ex-Marine" unless he paid a visit to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, just to see the field. A game was in progress and he asked Security if he could just see the inside of the Fenway and leave, happy. When the Head of Security turned out to be another "ex-Marine", well...you can imagine...he was escorted in and invited to stay as long as he wanted! A very happy baseball fan.
Shelley also drove us up to Cape Ann one day just to give us an idea of the towns along the North Shore. She likes eating as much as we do and we consumed massive quantities of ice cream. (Forget the sights, bring on the ice cream.)
There were so many other sights, either in Boston or outside of the City, but without a car and time, we didn't have a chance to:
- Visit the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, located about a 10 minute taxi ride from Boston. There is also public transportation.
- Take the two other walking Trails: The Black Heritage Trail, and Boston Women's Heritage Trail. Both sounded informative.
- Go on a Whale Watch. They run from May to September in Salem, Mass. You can take Bus #450 or #455 from Boston, or the Commuter Tail (T). The Salem Whale Watch guarantees whale sightings on a 110' fast boat. Doesn't that sound like fun?
- Go to Lexington/Concord, known as the two towns of history. Concord was the home of Louisa May Alcott, author of "Little Women". It is an easy ride from Boston but you do need a car. Every Patriots Day, the Concord Minutemen re-enact the first battle of the Revolutionary War. This is where the..."shot heard 'round the world" was fired.
And what else?
Why, eating, of course, one of my favorite things. One of Boston's oldest neighborhoods, The North End (also referred to as "Little Italy") was loaded with restaurants. It would have been impossible to pick out just one restaurants as a "must dine at."
One restaurant that I do remember was called Skipjacks, in Brookline, one of Shelley's favorites. Extremely good seafood (naturally) and quite reasonable. We also ate at a more upscale restaurant on another night but Skipjacks stands out in my memory.
A week, in and around the Boston area, would have been perfect but we still had a wonderful time in those three short days. Bring your walking shoes, leave the kids at home, and keep up your energy with lots of ice cream, candy and food while you effortlessly relearn American History. It was much more enjoyable and meaningful than sitting in a classroom and listening to your teacher drone on. Have a great time!
