Into The Kullu Valley - India
The Kullu Valley runs on both sides of the River Beas, North to South. It is extremely green and fertile and, besides apples, is famous for woven hand-made shawls and caps. Wool, Angora and Pashmina.
Walking through Kullu town while dodging the cows, other animals and trucks coming down the road...View image... we noticed sign after sign advertising "Kullu Factory - hand-made shawls." Based on some Lonely Planet advice, we purchased some 100% wool shawls from Bhuttico, in Kullu town, a women's cooperative. They are all hand-loomed by the women in this valley and Bhuttico will not sell a shawl saying it's "pashmina" if it's not. The shawls range in price and quality (a nice wool one runs about $10 US). A real Pashmina will cost about $100. All I wanted was a lightweight, warm and durable wool shawl to use on airplanes. Many, many colors and styles. Quite difficult making a choice.
Finally, the Span Hotel, our home for two nights. Located a little north of Katrain and about 15 miles from Manali, there are a total of 24 rooms in two blocks of 12 cottages each, along the River Beas. The altitude is around 5,000'. I loved a line in their information packet..."you are requested not to allow your personal attendants, maids, etc. to enter the public areas." Fortunately, or unfortunately, we don't have that problem!
The Span is another wonderful hotel to add on my "come-back" list. Excellent food and service in a beautiful location. Hotels don't get much better than the Span. View image
The next day, we drove over one those those all-too-familiar, mini-lane swinging bridges over the river. These swinging bridges for vehicles are a standard in Pakistan but this was the first one we'd seen in India.
On the other side of the river, a walk through some villages. Apple growing is the big business in Kullu but almost the entire crop had been picked by now. They also grow Plums which were picked in May. A surprise? Lots and lots of wild marijuana growing alongside the road. Jagdish pointed it out to us...it is definitely illegal to grow and sell in India, but.... Even though the Kullu area gets snow and is cold in the winter, there were also cacti growing ...along with abundant marijuana...what a combination...apples and marijuana...
Tomorrow...on to Manali....

Hello Sheila,
I am the owner of a small store in Canada, and after reading of your travels and of the wonderful shawl purchased at the Kullu Shawl factory, I wondered if you would be kind enough to provide the email of Mr. Gupta. I would love to be able to offer these to my customer. Any help which you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Michele
Dear Michelle:
IF you look back on one of the comments I received, this man was one of the many shawl makers, and here is his e-mail: handankullu@yahoo.com
I've also attached the website link to Bhuttico where I bought my shawks. - http://www.bhuttico.com/. Hope this helps and thanks for writing.
Best regards, Sheila
