Hobart, Tasmania And The Overland Track

We were now officially "Tassie bushwalkers."

If you are an outdoors person (and even if you aren't), I can't encourage you enough to visit Tasmania with its national parks and beautiful Tasman Peninsula. It is a laid-back island with friendly people and there are cycling holidays, walks, treks (both coastal and mountainous), little steam railways, historic sites...a motor vessel that leaves from Port Arthur Harbour for a tour of the Isle of the Dead, the last resting place of convicts, soldiers and free persons...or rent a car, camper or mobile home and drive around the Island. You could even take a 15-hour ferry from Melbourne on mainland Australia to Devonport in northern Tasmania.

Let's not forget the great food: salmon, oysters, mussels, tuna, crayfish - yummy. And FYI, this is what a real Tasmania Devil looks like...

Hobart is considered Australia's Southern gateway, founded in 1804. It is small, easy to get around and we just strolled the waterfront, malls, and ate outstanding seafood enjoying a little R&R after our Overland Track exertion.

The Cradle Mountain Overland Track lived up to its reputation as one of the "Great Treks of The World" but there are several others that I'd love to try in Tasmania. Check out the extremely detailed Australian Geographic website for information on Maria Island, Freycinet Peninsula Circuit, The Tasman Coastal Trail and the South Coast Track as well as the links I gave in planning regarding the Overland Track. Some of the above is beyond my ability and comfort zone but perhaps not yours. Whether you opt for being a Freedom Walker (come on, all you tough people)...be a wimp like us and stay in a nice hut....or just stay in the Cradle Mountain Lodge and dayhike... Do it! The Overland Track is a unique and wonderful experience!
